Pregnant Woman in Nature

WHAT IS A DOULA AND WHY SHOULD I HIRE ONE?

The word Doula means "woman servant" and is a title used for centuries to depict women specialized in caring for and supporting other women during pregnancy. The idea of being a servant or having a servant's heart is also a huge part of my spiritual life. It is not a new idea to Christianity or even the medical field. As a nurse for years, I have known first hand the pure beauty that comes from serving another person in need. Doula's do that for moms and their families and it amazing how much of a positive difference it makes.

A Doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, mental and spiritual support to the mother, partner and baby during pregnancy and beyond. A doula is the birthing mother's support and companion enabling her to have the labor she wants as well as coach her in unexpected situations. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) states, "continuous one-to-one emotional support provided by support personnel, such as the doula is associated with improved outcomes for the women in labor". Women who hire a doula have fewer complications, shorter labors, fewer c-sections, fewer inductions, less use of IV medications  improved VBAC rates, better APGAR scores and lower rates of postpartum depression.

FAQ

What You Need to Know

DO YOU PERFORM ANY PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS?

As your doula we will not be performing or subscribing any medical advice or treatments to you or your baby. As a highly trained and certified doula we can however  help let you know when to seek out medical advice and care from your OB and Pediatrician as well as provide you with education to feel more informed.

HOW WILL HIRING YOU AFFECT MY PARTNER’S ROLE DURING THE BIRTH?

We absolutely love being able to help the mother and father bond during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum phase. You get to see two people fall more in love, which is amazing! As your doula we will gladly be a support to not only the mother, but her spouse, allowing him to be involved at his comfort level.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTERACTIONS WITH MEDICAL STAFF LIKE?

We believe doctors and nurses are amazing and perform so many important roles during pregnancy and postpartum. We believe that the medical team deserves respect and the ability to perform their job helping our clients. We also believe that a mutual respect fosters better communication between the mother and the medical staff, allowing her wishes to be heard with more earnestness and care.
